The Philippines is among the most disaster-prone countries in the world. It experiences multiple destructive cyclones each year, in addition to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The continuous moderate to heavy rainfall received from June to November on a yearly basis causes flash floods and landslides in several low-lying and near riverbank areas in the Philippines. Heavy rainfall associated with the southwest monsoon has impacted the region, triggering widespread flooding and landslides across parts of Mindanao. The most at-risk populations are situated in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) and Region 12, where 2 cities and 43 municipalities have been affected.

Challenges

In July 2024, the calamity impacted around 143,451 families or 502,053 individuals, with 29,531 people residing in evacuation centres. The floods and landslides resulted in the loss of 8 lives and injuries to 23 people, and 2 individuals were reported missing.

Our current response

Through a local consultant, we have conducted a flood response in which we distributed non-food items containing household amenities and hygiene kits, including MHM kits for women and girls. We thank friends and individuals who have come through to support our response as we widen our fundraising portfolio.

Empowerment Through Action has promptly initiated its response in the BARMM region despite the uncertainty of when the flooding will subside. However, scaling up these efforts is crucial and requires support from donors. This expansion will enable the affected populations to access essential services such as health, clean water, and shelter until the situation stabilises.
